Monday, December 30

kinda wierd - i thought we'd be posting more now we're on holidays...

anyway, things are going well, albeit a bit hectic. we went shopping for a widescreen tv today but the one we wanted that had sold out of annoyingly, so we didnt get one after all. beas currently looking for pheasants (for new years eve). i'm off to see lord of the rings again, with hodgson and cathers tonight. and hopefully getting another homebrew going tomorrow morning if we have time, and then off to the deep dark peaks with hodge and barnaby for a trip to some pub in the middle of know where for a few pints of strong ale, before returning home to cook tea. mmmm....

there are lots of photos taken, but i've not got round to putting them up yet.

and bea has just returned home with 6 partridges....

Saturday, December 28

well - hello toyou all and congratulations for surviving the Christmas onslaught of food, fun and quite probably stress! we had a really lovely Christmas with all our close family on my side (we are seeing andy's over the next few weeks) and everyone wason great form. we'll be putting up photos on our online photo album in the next few days so keep your eyes peeled (as my dad is known to say!).

sadly we found out on boxing day evening that my poppy (mum's dad) had died. we had only said goodbye to him that lunchtime so it was a terrible shock and obviously really upsetting. he suffered from heart failure as he was getting ready for bed and granny was in the next room, although she heard him fall and was able to go through and see him before he actually died. poppy was an amazing man and i'll say more about him in a few days time when i can put a photo up.

please pray for andy and me and my family and especially for granny who is 80 and now on her own. the service of thanksgiving is on thursday 2nd january which i expect will be packed full of people - that's the kind of person poppy was!

so, i hope you all have fab new years celebrations - be good, or just don't get caught!

Tuesday, December 24

i guessi'm not that convincxed by the email, but would agree that its something definitely worth praying for.

bea and i have just spent the past 24 hours with some friends of ours, the kitcheners and as always had an excellent time. there are even some photos but due to a lack of a usb cable they cant go up - a little annoying but nevermind. i spent quite a bit of time also playing zoo tycoon with one of their sons - got to build lion, giraffe, sea lion, rhino, black panther, alligator, grizzly bear etc exhibits, and then remove all the fences and let them loose on the public.

bea and i also got to see a good film the otherday - sweet home alabama which i guess in some ways was a pretty standard rom-com, but did also remind me of being in texas again which was great.

ands now we're off now to see lucy bruen (one of beas bridesmaids) and a few others for a drink and then on to (a highly amusing) midnight mass, but anyway, hope you all have a good day tomorrow and seeya'll soon.

hello and a HAPPY CHRISTMAS to all of you!

so, i received an email which i do not know to be true or not but i don't see any harm in people praying for the war situation. so, here for you to practise your skills of discernment is the email:

URGENT PRAYER RE IRAQ
Dec 16, 2002

We have received a very important and strategic communication from Pastor
Ted Haggard of the World Prayer Center, Colorado Springs. Let the
intercessors of Europe join in with this urgent prayer request!

From Pastor Ted Haggard:

Last week the spirit of the Lord woke me in the middle of the night and
powerfully spoke to me. He told me that if we could mobilize 1,000,000
intercessors to pray for Saddam Hussein, that he would leave Iraq, thus
avoiding the need for a war. After He spoke to me, I saw a series of visions
of people suffering because of the horrors of war. Then I realized that God
had a plan that He was going to fulfill one way or another, but that His
greatest desire would be to remove Saddam without the suffering of so many.

I have shared this with Peter Wagner, Chuck Pierce, the International
Coalition of Apostles, and briefly on Daystar network, and felt prompted
this morning while praying at the World Prayer Center to write to you about
it. My heart is burning within me about this, because we have the ability to
simply have Saddam leave Iraq like so many other dictators have left their
countries thus opening the door for freedom without a war. I think, though,
that we only have until the end of December to rally the troops to pray.

Please join us in praying, and alert as many intercessors as you can, so
that we can play our part in raising these 1,000,000 intercessors to cry out
to God for war to be averted.

<\b>
enjoy the festive season - i hope it is stress-free, or at least full of HIS peace to get you through it! that's what i'm relying on anyway!!

Friday, December 20

i have found mr clifford on the internet! ha ha - the dragon gets everywhere... etcha sketch for hours! enter and scroll down until you find 'clifford the drag'.

what's yourlord of the rings personality?
so, van the interpreter i work with alot has just finished for the day and now for the next 5 weeks. i still have to wait until 2.20 to find out if my next student is going to be in. considering it's the last day of term (yipee) this is an unlikely occurence!

well, what can i tell you that andy hasn't already spilt the beans about? i can share the vision for our community with ya'll. God reminded me of what it was all about last night when i was praying and seeking him on why i felt so down. he led me back to acts 2 which is the basis for the vision "to live church as a 24hr lifestyle"

They joined with the other believers and devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, sharing in the Lord's Supper and in prayer. A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. And all the believers met together constantly and shared everything they had. They sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord's Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity-- all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their group those who were being saved.

so my plan is to meditate on this word over christmas. i shared about it last night when we met together and i am so grateful for god training me over the last year about his command to love others as you love yourselves, but only after you have loved god with all your heart, soul, and mind. the thing is, that we can only love others as we love ourselves when we are coming out of a place of being totally saturated in his love. this is the love that jesus was speaking about when he said "they will know that you are my disciples by the way you love one another" because this love is not human love, it is divine, supernatural, Godly love.

lord of the rings this evening. aarrhhhhh!!! i'm soooo excited!!

and if that wasn't enough, its the last day of term today, which means, no work for a month or so!

it seems as if nathan has been having one of those great days where the sun shines off everyone too... and he's been on the monk thing. theres something in the air. god, methinks...

anyway, rob's going home today and so can't come to lotr tonight which is a shame, but its been cool getting to know him - i've finally found someone who'll have some of my
jose cuervo tequila with me. mmmm....

Thursday, December 19

he he - i just had a look at andrew jones' blog and theres loads of family pics down the side - the 5th one down with debbie in it, he looks sooo like jonathan davies, the singer from the band korn , but then, theres a photo of him a little further down with samuel in it and he looks like bono!

i hope andrew doesnt take offence at either suggestion....

life can be sooo cool at times!

we had a brilliant evening with abigail and rob, eating yummy foods, drinking red wine, staropramen, home brew and stella and staying up till 2.30ish talking and drinking. then got up the following morning and cooked mexican breakfast (as taught to me by kristen rudd in dallas) with some amazing homemade salsa - we had made some last night to go with the falafel, using some of a sachet of herbs and spices given to me by shannon for my birthday over the summer, cooked up with some chopped up tomatos, then used the rest this morning with some chopped fresh coriander and banana (works really well together!) - mmmmm....

then came into town to meet people (albeit a little late) in coffee revolution for a drink, then popped over for a couple of lectures (which don't tend to happen, being the last week of term), and then gonna go back home, and have some more yummy food.

and then tomorrow, dan and i are bottling the homebrew and then going to watch the two towers (which i've heard is amazing) in the evening. its gonna be yet another good set of days.

life so good when you're not cynical anymore. i can hardly believe it myself! lots and lots of lovely lovely people. everywhere. yay!!!!

something i thought of recently - while bea and i were in ugc cinema on monday, we saw posters for the good girl which we saw while we were in texas - it was defintely the best film we saw out there - jennifer aniston really was superb in it. highly recommended

Wednesday, December 18

well - i'm just about to go to my BSL (british sign language) christmas party where i get the delight of signing 'rudolf the red nosed reindeer' to my boss of all people! at least i really enjoy bsl and i'm looking forward to practising it over christmas with my friend nick. the weekend is close and even closer now that i have a day off tomorrow (thurs) - hooray! i shall be spending it as a lady of leisure - lunching out and dropping round to friends for coffee.

rob and abigail are coming round for tea tonight and andy and i have created some culinary delights for them! mmmmmmmmm...

so the rest of the photos have gone up (only a few more) but they're there.

arent you all just itching to see what bea and i get for christmas?!!!? just wait and there might be a few photos going up over the hols...

or maybe there wont - kinda depends on available computer software etc i guess.

anyway, it feels like the weekend is here. i'm just a bit gutted i dont get to see the two towers today, unlike some others who read this blog!

this is too funny! i pinched it off andrew jones' blog so don't give me the credit!
PRAISE GOD FOR LEE COLLIER! he has rescued me from micah with his reasonable and true comment. please jesus, may micah never know the truth about that until we meet in heaven and can laugh about it.
it's FREEZING today! oh and i got caught out on ursux site by someone called micah who has little better to do with her/his time than to find out where people are accessing from. i thought about commenting that i access from a university and there is no reason why a trillion of us couldn't access from here but then that would be lying to a certain extent. weird how satan used it to fill me with fear, well at least i know where i was created and by who and the best bit of all is that i share the same inheritance with jesus.

all these little lessons that i keep learning. last night we had our church/cluster/community christmas party. it was ace. i love these people and it is wonderful to be exploring and joining with them on the journey.

Tuesday, December 17

sorry for another post! some friends of ours are going on a ski trip and to try and keep costs low are wanting to borrow gear. if anyone has a snowboard or skis which would fit a bloke (5'8") then could you ring us. the trip is january and i would trust these people with my stuff, if i had any.thank you!
just for jen...

ever wondered what google's top searches were? well, you can find out here.
well, i'm sure ant will be proud of me - the photos from the party(s) that went on over the weekend are now up and live on our photo album - starting at the fatcat pub, then on to liz lovells birthday party (where we somehow managed to not actually get a pic of liz herself!!), and then on to barnaby's leaving party. there are still a few missing, and none of the witty captions have been added yet, but they'll follow soon enough... (each pic going to the corresponding parties)

and i hear neill's spell checker still isnt quite up to scratch yet!!

got an email from my friend pants who has kindly informed me that we are all going to die! having read the article he is referring to, it almost makes sense, if at least only so that we don't have to have anything more to do with our government and that of george w bush as well.

please don't harass me about this statement unless you have read and understood the article.

Monday, December 16

i've tried to put a statistics counter on the site to keep track of all you munchkins!

it's just up there in the top right corner

awwww - nathan, our austin correspondent (shannon travels far too much - more of a texan correspondant) has been writing lovely things about us on his blog, although looking at our template, i'm not sure if he really wants to aspire to our html skills. i mean when we want to start a new paragraph, we have to put "p" in those diagonal brackets everytime caused we messed it up so much. one day it will get a make over, (with a little help from ant hopefully)

anyway, we've already had our hobbit and elvish names, and so nathan moves us on to our stage/ pornstar names. and here they are:

(andy:) hamish davies

(bea:) tousel blight

see - not as cool as nathans - "Caddy Wampus Gibbs", although how his dog/ baby manages to have one i'm not sure...

y'anyway...

if you were following my job situation last week, i can confirm that of the 22 hours i was paid (handsomely) for, i only wrote for about 2 of them. which kinda works out as £110 an hour. nice work if you can get it...

...

bloody hell, i hate christmas songs - i can just about cope with carols, but the stuff that gets played in every shop, every christmas! and you know it'll be the same ones again next year and forever more. please Jesus - come back soon!!

errrr....

other news: the photos are not quite there yet, although, i should be able to get them sorted and resized tonight, and so should be going up tomorrow morning. and there are some very good photos too...

for the meantime, i've updated other parts of the photo album and added (not overly amusing) captions to all the photos.

but yes the weekend was an excellent one, i guess as good as the previous one... and we have the two towers to look forward to this week - yay!

i wonder if there are any MISS-spelled words in this blog... sorry neill ;)

Good Morning Bloggers!

Hooray for a fabulous weekend, finished off roundly with a great episode of Poirot. Unfortunately Cathers is too smart for her own good and told us all how it was going to end before we had even got through the first half!

No doubt Andy will be directing you to some more photos to illustrate the weekend which was awesome. I slept a lot, although I had the worst night of my life on Saturday (a long story which has been sorted out now anyway PTL). Sheffield was party central this weekend, even the amazing Viv was going to parties galore on Friday night - she says that Internationals party a lot better than us Brits.

If you want to pass some time have a go at coin tossing.

Friday, December 13

Courtesy of Barnaby Collier, he found a site, huggyjesus.com whereby they are selling a soft, cuddly and hypoallergenic doll of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

And heres a picture of a little girl praying to the idol (as is warned against in the Good Book):

And out of reverence for Mr Collier, I have used correct punctuation etc. for this special message.

Wednesday, December 11

(andy) i think its the sun....

anyway, good news: the photos from the communes christmas party last friday are now up on our photogallery.

as always a little taster of the photos on the site, click on a pic to go there:

anyway, beas sister charlotte/ charlie/ mogul is arriving this evening and staying for a few days, visiting sheffield uni....

and in true notetakers style, i didnt write a word today and got £30. yesterday, i wrote a staggering 6 sides of notes, but did get paid £60 and on monday i wrote 1 side of notes for a days total of £50. tomorrow i'll be getting at least £40 free.

its a tough job, and i hate it!!

is this a tomato?

Tuesday, December 10

(andy) it turns out you can find out your elf and hobbit names on the web:

i am: Podo Hamwich of Buckleberry Fern (as a hobbit) and Eärendur Elensar (as an elf)

bea is: Bramblerose Hamwich of Buckleberry Fern (as a hobbit) and Eámanë Elensar (as an elf)

click here to find out yours!

one last thing before i bore you all to death! i have been perusing some pictures on nathan's homepage and thought he may be interested in this dog 'wedding dress' i found on the web.

i keep forgetting to let you know that a freind of ours in america is blogging. he's called kerry.
hi folks

how is everyone. WE HAVE A LOUNGE!! yipee, it is amazing. in stead of just cleaning it we actually decided to strip all the walls and take up the carpet. we discovered that we have really lovely floorboards underneath so this was a wonderful surprise. the look is very mexican/french farmhouse.

as andy has told you, we had a great weekend - on friday we went to the most absorbent christmas party ever at the commune which rocked. i got tired quickly - why break the habit of a lifetime - but andy stayed on and took some great photos which he's trying to sort out for all of you lovely people to see.

God has been talking to me a lot about repentance and unforgiveness these last couple of days - building on the lessons about reaping what you sow. ha ha - he used mike breen on sunday to make me realise that often 'issues' or 'struggles' with individuals are just unforgiveness... and then he started putting me in situations where i had to put it into practise! there is real freedom in forgiving, particularly when you never realised that your unforgiveness was actually being a major block to loads of stuff in your life.

nathan was asking about some quirky facts that i put up on the blog some time ago. here is another little taster of these weird goings on for you to be amazed by!

Absolutely the Least Substantial Reason for a Knife Fight: Police in Mansfield Township and Hackettstown, N.J., charged Emmanuel Nieves, 23, with aggravated assault on Nov. 13 after he allegedly slashed the face of his friend Erik Saporito, 21, as the two men fought after arguing over which one has more hair on his buttocks.

Monday, December 9

(andy) have just spent quite some time working out how this template html works.... getting the hang of it.
well, that was one good weekend!!

more photos to follow (when i get the time to size em up and upload them), but the party on friday night was absolutely brilliant (steves coffee bowl being something of a highlight!). then on saturday a load of us (thankyou, cathers, abigail, chris, beth, ben...) helped us completely sort out our front room (so we now have one - and very nice it is too - so much more than the one in our previous house!).

then laul, beth, dan, rach and pinks came round in the evening for roast pork and potatos etc (mmmmm), then on sunday, abigail and cathers came round for thai green chicken curry - very spicy (sorry abigail!), then bea and i watched "the man who wasnt there" which we both loved, and then went to 2nd sunday (which was very encouraging to hear)

a few thoughts on that:

the part about "believing that you have already recieved the things you ask for in prayer, and God will give them to you" to me completely speaks of thankfullness - thanking God for providing todays meal is knowing that he'll provide tomorrows.

it often feels as if the battle for me is more in my head than against an external force - seeing that the mountain is still just a mountain, and not being afraid of its size but believing in God's power. i guess its both.

so i still need to do more "theological editing" in understanding how prayer fits into it all (i was talking to matt parkins about it last night)

anyway, like i said, more photos to follow

ps: and no html links - use the names at the side!

Friday, December 6

a little song for neil lambert who appears to be one of our most faithful followers in terms of blogging.

neil lambert is so cool

sometimes he acts like he should be in school

he's very funny and doesn't worship money

and his soup is the best

'cos it's bigger than the rest

neil loves God in a beautiful way

he inspires and delights

but noone thinks he's gay

he lives in cambridge

with his crazy family

and i know his roots go deep

by the way my faith leaps

when i'm around him

man, i've just been looking around other blogs and matt p has some cool pics of his scottish safari park - hodgson would love em. my favorite being the massive wooly cattle with these huge horns.

and linux - i get it (i think... its an o/s right? or is there extra subtlty i missed...)

hooray - it's the weekend! last night i made a chocolate bread and butter pudding which looks yummy. it needs to sit in the fridge for a couple of days before being cooked and whenever my mum makes it everyone is happy!

if anyone reading this has forgotton, or didn't know, we are needing help tomorrow (sat) to get our house in order! we are focusing on the lounge so starting at 10am. your help would be greatly appreciated.

have a fabulous weekend!

well its friday once again, and the weekend is shaping up very nicely...

bea and i and a few others are going out for a drink on focus sales (so its free), followed by the commune christmas party where we all get to reminiss (sp?) about the good old days of parties, the absence of the hudds (the sheffielders who got away) and general drunkeness, with a few mentions of the "W" party at new year 98/99, and hopefully have a good time anyway.

then on saturday, we are getting our front room back (with help from some of you - any more help appreciated!), and then a few people are coming round for another of beas legendary roasts (pork).

and then on sunday is second sunday where the breen is talking on "is God in control" to which the answer will be "no", and stuff about being at war (in a spiritual sense) etc - should be very interesting...

anyway, last night, bea and i took our old neighbour viv down to upperthorpe to see the legendary lights near safeways. so you get an idea of what they look like, i took pics of it - the first one hopefully gives you an idea of the garishness of the house:

the second you need to turn the brightness on the monitor up to see the 10 foot high santa pointing at the people responible:

enjoy.

for directions to the spectacle, take the road downfrom commonside, the one opposite the petrol station (at the bottom of springvale road), not the one that goes down the side of the punchbowl, the one to the left of it, that leads all the way down and round towards safeways. just on the bend, prepare to be dazzled!

see (nearly) all of you tonight. well some of you...

Wednesday, December 4

just a follow on from the past healing, bea prayed for someone yesterday and the same happened. i'll let her explain though.

keep talking to the mountain

anyway, work is over for us two, and i've been on a little treasure hunt at howden house finding out about the future of walkley. mmmm....

matt parkins has brought my attention to a very cool site which appears to be an english site and so therefore even easier to order from.
ant has got a funky new haircut. his antcam isn't up to date yet but keep checking in anyway!

Tuesday, December 3

we just had andy's dad to stay which we really enjoyed. he took us out to thyme and as usual i was overwhelmed by his generosity - a starter, main, pudding, coffee, wine and bundles of sparkling water later we walked out and came back home to listen to andy playing his guitar (not something that happens very often!).

i'm trying to find train times at cheap prices to cheltenham but on the internet i'm not having much luck.

Monday, December 2

(andy)
"stop trying to hit me and hit me"

which was when morpeus was saying to neo (in the matrix ) in their fight scene.

stop trying to convince God to heal someone - you know he wants to, so let him. he's wants to give it to you as a gift for you to receive, so receive it. Jesus never asked God if he would heal someone or not, so why do we? why the need to pray for 5-10 mins telling God whats the matter with them, and asking him as if he might or might not heal them?

22 Jesus answered, "Have faith in God. 23 I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, 'Go, fall into the sea.' And if you have no doubts in your mind and believe that what you say will happen, God will do it for you. 24 So I tell you to believe that you have received the things you ask for in prayer, and God will give them to you. 25 When you are praying, if you are angry with someone, forgive him so that your Father in heaven will also forgive your sins." Mark 11:22-25 (CEV)

when you ask for somethink believe you already have it - know that God wants to give it to you before you even ask for it and you hardly even have to ask for it!

and all this applies to other things too - God is not only your saviour and healer. hes also your provider. so let him provide for you. (this is the one that i think Gods pressing me on right now)

and the rest.

last week bea and i were walking to work and she said her knee was hurting quite a bit. without thinking i said "your knee does not hurt, it is healed" i then thought to qualify that for bea saying that it was more of a prayer than having a go at her. by the time i had said that, her knee didnt hurt anymore.

talk to the mountain.

its the same faith that will fix a knee that will move a mountain, its just our head doesnt think of it that way. we see the size of the mountain (which is big), not the size of our God (who's a lot bigger).

when morpheus says, "i'm just trying to free your mind" when showing neo what he could be. and then when neo decides to take on agent smith in the tube station, whilst everyone else says to neo to run, morpheus says, "hes starting to believe".

and by the end, neo doesnt even need to need to dodge the bullets

like i've said before, "write your theology in pencil" (well actually matt parkins said that). this will no doubt be editted and amended before long, but this is what i believe Gods saying to me right now.

more later...

the weekend has gone already! i had a muddled time really, making arrangements that i couldn't keep and my punctuality wasn't great! nevermind.

today andy's dad is coming to visit which is something i've been really looking forward to. he is staying the night and taking us out to dinner - parents are wonderful things!

well, i've practically done all my Christmas shopping now and i had hoped to make some journals but time has slipped through my fingers and i've not got round to doing it. i have however started organising a team to help us sort out our lounge on saturday which is going to be amazing. bye for now!

Friday, November 29

i have removed killing the buddha.com because it seems to be a bit boring and i have realised that it isn't as inspiring as it was on my first three visits! however, i have added a new site which is funky and very pleasing to the soul! it is called nickbeese.com and it the website for my friend nick who is a graphic designer in london, and is currently enjoying an unexpected longer christmas break.

have a wonderful weekend!

(andy) reading through ants blog, where he was saying that others have mentioned him in their's - kinda cool how everyone links to each others - becoming quite a "scene" this blogging has.

and so without further ado, "big shout outs go out to (!!)" abigails blog with a mention of mark stoneys hopefull radio 1 (couldnt be bothered with that link, check abigails blog for it) airplay, ants webcam, mat parkins blog with all its interesting musings, and theres abigails house mate jen , oh sod it - all this html is getting boring. use the links on the right there and read each others blogs (the bottom 3 being our texan friends), get others involved in it, and we can all write blogs that have more links than substance.

like this one.

and out of a sense of completeness, "its the weekend again. hooray!" in fact bea even noted this fact last night. my, how we're having fun - doesnt time fly when you're bored?!

the amazing viv has got herself and her housemates a website which is very exciting. andy and i are mentioned within the first few lines so obviously we feel very loved. i think i shall put it as a link down on the right as well!
i have started to improve my skills and so i'm trying to learn to touch type for free! this is so good because it then means i will be more employable at work in the higher paid area of electronic note-taking.
yesterday i went home from work just after lunchtime as my student didn't turn up. i managed to sleep from 3-7pm and then from 12.30am until getting up at 7.45 am this morning. i am so tired all the time (maybe now from oversleeping though) but i am hoping that this is just because it has been a very long term and there are still 3 weeks to go!

last night we were round at ant and caroline's with others from our little church and we were recording a small sketch for the advent prayer stations. we spent most of the time in hysterics at steve ward's sheep impression and then we were laughing at our ability to hum 'while shepherds watched...' - ant is compiling it all and it will bring a very jolly and festive feel to the contemplative space in st tom's! (the prayer stations are up and running from 1st december for two weeks).

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all americans. although this is not an engllish celebrations, we do actually happen to be going to a thanksgiving dinner party tonight!

Thursday, November 28

i have just been surfing a little via ant's crazy blog and came accross a really cool little quiz.

i only got 7/10 which i don't think is particularly impressive!

well, the car is fabulous! oh yes - we are clearly on our way to accomplishing the american dream - married, house, car, children (oops - not yet on that one!)(oh, and not american either). so, my blooging friends, how are you all today? did i tell you all that i've joined a gym? i went last night and did a mini workout and then had a sauna which was lovely, although not naked which is a bit strange and not nearly as effective me thinks. i then went round to the amazing viv's house and saw karen and viv - lovely people and surprisingly close friends considering the brevity of our time (virtually) living together! it's karen's birthday on friday (tomorrow) and we are heading round there to celebrate before we go on to cathers' dinner party for which i am meant to be making a pumpkin pie but there are no pumpkins in any shops anymore! apparently you can buy it tinned from safeways though.
well, we got the stuff, a good book, and the time, and so brewing started.

unfortunately, mistakes had been made before anything was even heated up - putting the sugar in at the beginning of the mash. probably not a huge problem, and the specific gravity was pretty much exactly what it should be at the right time.

also killed the yeast by putting it in too hot water. getting some more today - hopefully it wont ruin the mixture making it wait this long.

and general other poor practices abound. one of the reasons i could never be a professional scientist i guess....

a bit more respect for the old brewers and monks is given i think - i was up till 2.30 getting it all finished! not enough time after all.

in the lords hands now - it will certainly require a miracle to rescue this one....

on a slightly more odd note, dan and i were reading the book about how different ales came to be, and the story of porter ale had an amusing story (although probably not for those involved). a long time ago, porter was actually a mixture of cheaper mild ale and more expensive sour ale. someone then worked out a way of artificially aging the ale to make the sour stuff cheaper to produce. this was then brewed in the same barrels as the mild, and lots of porter could be made quite cheaply. at its peak of popularity, huge vessels holding 1/2 million gallons of beer (2 million litres or so) were used to make the stuff, with big parties held in their honour. at one such event, one of the tanks burst open, washing away richard meux's brewery and a row of terraced cottages, killing 8 people in the process!!

all interesting stuff...

Wednesday, November 27

oh dear - once again, a glitch in the html code has caused an eneditable problem, and the pic doesnt work either. not sure it would have anyway, but cant even fix it now. grrr..

hmmm... not much else happening now (apart from getting our car and cruising round town for a bit).

should be doing another batch of homebrew tonight - need to get the ingredients and recipe this afternoon - am thinking about a wheat beer like hoegaarden perhaps.

and blogging is indeed great.

(andy) something amusing our far east correspondant, adrian hudd, sent some of us:

hi everyone

today i have collected the bankers draft so andy and i can buy a car!!!!!!!!! this is more exciting than you can possibly imagine and the lessons in patience i have learned from all the money fiasco is wonderful - let's just see if i can put them into practise in four weeks time! By the way, you did realise that today is exactly four weeks until Christmas, didn't you?!

I have been playing around on our home computer and i've been designing some rather smashing cards. due to the inability for Christian cards to ever be cool and sendable i have decided to try and develop a range - i'llbe posting some of these up from time to time and your feedback would be great. that goes for non-Christians too!

did i tell you all that i have joined a gym? i went to a rowing class on sunday called 'crew' which was great and i'm heading down there tonight as well - need some personal space kind of thing!

blogging is great!

just trying something out... excellent - managed to get separate users for bea and i, so we can log in on our own accounts, and it'll say who did each post for us.

anyway. just before the weekend, bea and i were listening to the ben folds live cd (very good indeed i might add) and before the song brick he explains whats its about and its completely changed the way we see it now. what we thought was a song about how he and his girlfriend were breaking up and trying to cope with the situation, he actually explains its about "when he and his girlfriend had to get an abortion whilst they were at high school." that its not a political statement about abortion or anything just the stuff they went through at the time.

it just makes the song so much sadder. and even better to listen to him singing it live.

(bea)good morning - today is my sister's 18th birthday! i spoke to her this morning which was cool and she thanked me for the earrings and then proceeded to tell me how she got her boyfriend to re-pierce her ears at the weekend because she thought she'd get some earrings for her birthday!!

i'm at collegiate campus which won't mean anything to most of you, but this is scary new territory for me! i have managed to find the room and stuff already so i thought i would just catch up on the blog while i wait for the lecturet to start. last night we went to the fat cat ( a very cool pub, seeling real beer) and ended up taking part in the pub quiz. did you know that during the 100years war, there were 3 kings on the english throne who were called henry?

Monday, November 25

(bea)just been checking in with the blogging community and have discovered that kristen and joshua have a blog which is cool. i never got to meet them when i was in the states but andy fell in love with them, much in the same way as we both fell in love with trish and danny.

the weekend has been a weird on! saturday was one of the best days i've had for ages and ages - andy and i went to meadowhall to do a mystery shopper visit and also to soak up the atmosphere of pre-christmas stress, babies getting fed up, women dragging men around and the like - fortunately we were unsuccessful and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! on our way home we got kidnapped by James Bond and spent two and a half hours with him at the cinema - not the most difficult of kidnappings! then we went to ant and carolines's which was ace.

sunday started off great with me joining a gym and then going to a rowing class with rach - hard work and i can feel it in my back today! we then had a LUSH lunch back at ours and then things went a bit wrong - marriage is so much harder than people let you in on. BUT... people love us so much and that is amazing - the support that i discovered last night when i went to our celebration was wonderful - i felt really encouraged. andy and i managed to let the sun go down on our anger and hurt but it was all sorted by the time we went to bed (the issues are still there but we were in places of forgiveness and comforting each other).

i got the tram to work today - still very exciting!

only four more weeks of term left including this one - then the party really begins. for those who read about my worries of war breaking out and my cousing being sent away - abigail has told me that the weather isn't good at the moment so war is unlikely - apparently they will wait till spring (!?!)

Friday, November 22

(andy) and on a slightly less altruistic note, new pictures for the new matrix films. mmmmm.....

the end of the week is here once again. it always seems like yesterday when i write that each week...

(bea)ha ha! i am really getting the hang of this html business and creating templates for our blog. soon i will be able to charge millions!! world domination will be MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

anyway, i have put some links on the site over to your right and down a bit which means you can support breast cancer, hungry animals etc. i will also get the hunger site on this blog as well. hope you are all well.

Thursday, November 21

(andy) hi all - been forgetting to write my name at the beginning of blogs recently, so some of my ramblings could've been mistaken for beas fair words.

anyway, just been doing a round of blog catching up and found some really cool stuff matt parkins has been blogging , especially with what he called "counterfiet God" and the theology of law - revelation not theory. good stuff.

also something amusing at the bottom of the page about how to deal with marketing crap that comes at us all day everyday. definietly worth a read

this is ant clifford at work. he and his family are going through it judging by today's post on their blog so i think those who believe in the power of God should get praying. i feel poorly today and don't get why this healing thing isn't as easy as getting a can of diet coke out the machine. BUT... i have had a partial healing for my asthma and i don't need to go and see the chest specialist any more, and i'm cutting down on my inhalers and i'm still well - yee ha! God is good! also not taking any antihistamines and i'm not allergic to my house - hooray!

this made me think lots. mostly think about my sister's boyfriend who is wonderful - a black guy - incredibly sensitive, funny, gentle, immense integrity, honest, generous, fun, handsome, loyal, committed.

it's good to be reminded of someone - that way you instantly enter the realm of prayer which cannot do anything other than bless the person who came to mind. hope J is blessed today!

well dan and i are now planning our next brew as we speak - bought a book but it was too complicated for us novices, so miht swap it for a more basic one. anway, the previous brew is slowly getting there. to be honest it looks just like coke, and almost tastes like it to. quite thin, but miraculously drinkable!

may not be going to london this weekend after all as money problems have stopped us getting the car in time. not good.

Tuesday, November 19

(bea)hee hee!! i have never chuckled so much as when my intelligent american friend (who shall remain nameless because she is so wonderful that i wouldn't want anyone judging her) admitted that she didn't realise ireland and northern ireland were two different countries!!

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND I THINK YOU ARE AMAZING - YOU ARE PARTICULARLY SEXY IN CERTAIN ITEMS OF 80s CLOTHING TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(andy)apologies now for the lengths of todays blog!!

this is all bits cut out of an email i wrote taht it thight might be worth putting up here

anyway, stuff with church has been getting a little interesting recently in relation to structures or their attempted lack of. not sure how much you know, although jen might have mentioned it, but bea, simon, and especially me are trying to do this whole church thing as something that is not a clearly defined structure, with the admin etc that st tms and church in general likes to put into things, but is more about making people responsible for what they eat. this book bea has called on eating by susie orbach which talks about eating when you're hungry and stopping when you're full, and also when you are hungry, stop and think to yourself, "what am i hungry for?", as a way of building healthy eating patterns.

anyway, this book has been a significant help in bea (and the many other women bea has converted to it!) and being able to eat healthily. i was thinking about this, and aplied it to how we do church and realised that so often, we are just fed a massive meal every sunday with a few snacks in between, during the week, and that all of this stuff we were expected to turn up to, to "be good and finish your plate" as all children get told (in england at least - a little less practical in america although a lot do!). i also noticed some friends of ours who have a 6 month old baby, which they had to feed each day, several times a day, he needed discipline, he needed telling when he needs to eat, he needed baby food, not meat.

and it all suddenly dawned on me. if we are mature enough, we should be able to be responible for our diets, that we know when to eat, when to stop, what we want, what is balanced, what is unhealthy, what makes us fat, what we enjoy. in 1 Corinthians 3:2 it talks about poeple not being able to eat meat yet. and there we see people, new christians who are hungry all the time, people that need others to tell them when to eat, when not to eat, to give them structured meal times, to check they have a balanced diet because they arent mature enough to do it themselves.

the problem being that a lot of people never got out of the mind set they were brought up on which was, be fed, eat what you're given, dont think about what it is, just eat it. people never took responsibilty for what they eat and ended up eating too much inappropriate food with very little exercise to burn it off.

and what simon, bea and i are wanting to see happen is get poeple to a place where they can ask themselves, "how do i feed on God? what do i want to eat today? am i getting a complete, balanced and healthy diet?" we are all different poeple with different tastes and requirements. whilst there some spiritual chicks that need someone else to go out, find food and be fed lots so they can grow up quickly and healthily, there are loads who have eaten to much to be able to fly!

the difficulty being, how do we model this? all people have ever known is the standard church structures that provide the big meals and take away a lot of choice and so personal responability. i'm not saying structures are bad at all, but they are there to provide a specific purpose - to build a framework for healthy eating when we grom up and become responsible for our own eating. no baby would ever work out how to feed itself, cloth itself, learn to walk etc, but need adults to teach it these things so it can do them for itself and then pass it on to its children. dan cooper had a good picture of a hermit crab. the shell it uses for protection works well for it, but there comes a time when it needs to lose its shell and find a structure that does not limit its growth.

so how do you break out of these structures when people have them so ingrained in their minds? how do you make people responible for what they eat? the difficulty i have is, that a lot of this stuff really is a teaching that needs modelling, a pattern as you described the, a blueprint for what He wants His church to look like. by its very nature, it can't be something a small group or clusters focus' on to look at, but needs to be something that breaks small group boundaries down and says, its "i'm not about structures - you know how to eat properly, take responsibilty for what you eat. if you dont like eating sausages, dont eat them. but find a source of protein you do like".

like the hermit crab, this is not to say we live an undisciplined and unstructured life, but one where we actively take responsibilty for what we do and dont do.

and i think this is where a lot of the stuff i wrote a while ago in the "nu church essay" comes in, about saying to people, be creative in what you do, be yourself. break down the church structures that confine you so much. meet with God in the ways YOU meet God, not in the few ways possible so far. and in all this we'll see the freedom that allows others that won't go near a church structure (whether thats a small group or a literal building) to be a part of the body at large. it also allows people to be creative and be themselves in how they meet with God. and it will create so many expressions of peoples lives with God, such a rich diversity of relationships that people cant help but see God and His people living in freedom, creativity, honesty and integrity, and that is attractive.

i hate the idea of preaching if i think of it as standing in front of a church and talking. but if i think of it as writing things on a blog that others can read and comment back to me on, then cool. its makes me read the bible, look things up, think about what it says, "meditating upon scriptures" if you will. and all this in a way thats me, that allows me to worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth.

(bea)well, it's monday again! unfortunately i feel really tired but nevermind - we had an AMAZING weekend to blame! the weather hasn't been anything to rave about but it has been dry - we watched the extended version of Lord of the Rings on Saturday afternoon and then in the evening we watched Harry Pottoer 2 at the cinema - turned up at 7.50pm but couldn't get into a showing before 10pm! Both films were great - LOTR a bit better that HP2 but then I suppose that would be expected. LOTR seems very timely at the moment - the one we watched at the weekend has an interesting line that goes something like, "many that deserve life are given death and there are some that are dead that deserve life". It really made me think about the death of Myra Hindley and the reactions of people in our country towards her and her imprisonment. I went into the guardian archives and read some things about her and the murders and even some writings that she did herself. i don't feel angry or bitter - i feel incredibly sad and sorry that she never was able to know freedom. Apparently she had planned to go and stay in a Roman Catholic Convent on her release but it seems thta cigarettes and bad health got the better of her.

LOTR 2 is out next month - the trailer looks incredible, and again is very timely - almost eerily so! In the trailer we see Strider talking to a king of the people who is saying how he refuses to risk open war, and Strider responds by saying, "war is upon you, whether you risk it or not". Andy has a lot to say about this and I'm sure he will tempt you with his tit-bits of thought in this blog, but for me, I just see so much war everywhere - in relationships, families, countries, cultures, terrorism, religion etc and it is foolish in my eyes to even assume that we are not likely to go to war. i hope that we don't - my cousin Tim is training at Sandhurst and it really worries me about where he might get sent to in the event of war breaking out. I also think that there must be other otions, which have not yet been exhausted, for peacekeeping. While we were in texas there was a press conference we heard about which said that 18th November was a proposed date for war on iraq. Well, that's today and it would seem that we are not going to war... yet.

My Dad called us on friday to see how we are doing - he is a wonderful Dad and i'm really looking forward to spending time with him at Christmas (probably doing a jigsaw!)

I don't have a lot else to say! Those of you from texas who are reading this will be excited to hear that we made mexican breakfast yeaterday and it was amazing! We had some friends round to share it with and thay totally agreed with how lush it was!!!! Lots of love to Pinks if he has joined you - I hope you're not takng him skinny dipping!!

Friday, November 15

(bea)just been in a lecture where a lad leaves early so he can go and pray (to Allah) and this reminded me that it is ramadan at the mo'. well, i've just been perusing some other blogs via andrew jones' blog and found an advert about ramadan in other countries. also, marjorie allen told me the other night that the muslims in her work are allowed to take extra time at lunch to pray, and they have even set up a prayer room specifically for ramadan. have any Christians out there ever been allowed any extra time off to pray?
(bea)my husband is a crazy man - what is he doing with all these quiz's and tests? anyone would think he was insecure in his identity!!

so... i also have been browsing the web and i have come accross a site called killing the buddha which is a non-religious but exploratory on-line magazine about religion, God, blah blah. i think it is well worth a look for believers or not - it may screw with your head and fill your conversations with provocative statements, but then we all want to be like barnaby anyway, don't we?!

anton may be staying the weekend - hooray!

something far more construcative than reading the newspaper - reading other peoples blogs - i've found ant's one is a hive of wierd and wonderful things he finds on the web each day - for examle, preschoolcops is worth a quick look.

and here i am perpetuating the idea that the web is just a page of links to other pages full of links....

man, if anyone reads this blog ever again... sorry bea...

ps - i'll be ther ant, although i prefer the marshall jackhammer to a rat.

(andy) yes!!!

You are Hobbes!
You're a bit too mellow to be an incarnation of Calvin, but you're still his best pal. You don't mind having fun, though, and enjoy playing tricks on your friends when they least expect it.
Take the What Calvin are You? Quiz by contessina_2000@yahoo.com!

i am hobbes. i new it!

as long as i dont read the headlines too much in which case i guess i become one of calvins more psychotic incarnations.

i also came out as a CO2 bomb... kinda middling...

(andy) a brief but needed apology - to say mat p's jumping on a bandwagon is of course highly inaccurate - i vaguely remember mat p blogging looonngg ago, when i barely new what the internet was... so he's not so much jumping on a bandwagon as blazing the trail it will follow.

well anyway, friday is upon us and the weekend is nigh.

actually, some odd things've happened to me in the past few days. if you remember a while ago on this very blog i demonstarated my complete lack of knwoledge of current affairs with the firestrike in particular. this did shock me a little, and although i didnt do anything about it at the time, reading the blog bea made recently mentioning the guardian website, i thought, maybe i could spend a few minutes a day going there and reading the headlines. and given that the whole country is going on about the war in iraq, i thought it might be a good idea to find out what all the fuss is about.

so i went to the website, and read a few headlines about the al-queada (sp?), bin ladens message from the grave, the bali bomber being as pleased as punch, a pentagon hawks slating of europe for being too liberal, scary-ass warnings sent to any country that sides with the "butchers in the whitehouse" or whatever they said, blair saying about all the bomb threats we get everyday. once i got over the fact not a lot of them were as antiwar as i'd expect from the guardian, i found myself thinking things that i maybe shouldnt and getting really opinionated.

fortunately i wont be airing them here... other than that, now i've read the papers once or twice i've found i'd rather be ignorant than opinionated and judgemental.

Thursday, November 14

(andy) well it seems to have worked with a link at the bottom of the pic. as a sulute to mat p, the general page for all the quizs is:

which muppet are you?

and here is the star wars personality one...:

which star wars character are you?

anyway, it is pretty miserable in sheffield at the mo as my wife has pointed out. not sure whether its wet enough to get a bus home or not... hopefully.
(andy) well it seems mat(t?) parkins has joined what ant described as the latest "moving to norfolk park", that is writing blogs. soon there'll be so many of them, blogger will start charging us for using them and mike'll start preaching about them. in fact i'm surprised he hasnt already. i guess theres limited airtime these days...

anyway, blogs... mat p... he had this link to one of those websites that have those pointlessly amusing quiz things that ask you a few qustions (not disimilar to myers-brigs or belbin in a sense) and then tells you which muppet you are. it also offers you the html to put in your blog, so here goes (with a certain sense of apprehension)...

You are Kermit!
Though you're technically the star, you're pretty mellow and don't mind letting others share the spotlight. You are also something of a dreamer.

well if that didnt work, i was kermit.
theres also one about which star wars character, and just to dispel any comments that you may be thinking, i wasnt chewbakka, but actually han solo. i just noticed, chewbakka, as in chewing baccy, the bizarre practice of chewing huge wads of tobacco in your mouth. i guess not a coincidence...
anyway, lets see if the html thing worked...
(bea)hooray for me!! i have successfully made our template more aesthetically pleasing!
(as confusing as this is, this post follows the one immediately below so read that one first!)

ant, caroline and ben clifford's blog - a fine specimen of an expertly designed and beautifully presented template! there is even a webcam of the lovely ant. do not be deceived - although he looks miserable a lot on his webcam he assures me he is smiling on the inside. i did notice yesterday that he received a phonecall which made his eys light up and he was smiling and smiling and smiling and...

it is happening: WE'RE LIVING CHURCH!! - YIPPEE!!

(bea)I am intrigued as to why i can't fathom this template business! i really want the right hand side of this blog to be uniform i.e. all white and blue/purple. also i'd like the fonts the same but i really am not succeeding. if anyone reads this rambling and could offer a solution or would like to talk me through it that would be greatly appreciated.

sheffield is dreary and damp at the moment - i would even go as far as to say that the air is moist but i know so many people who hate the word 'moist'! andy and i got the tram to work this morning - i still get excited when i use the trams! the trams are good as well because there are always enough free newspapers to go round unlike on the buses where they only provide about 5 and these tend to get trampled under foot somehow (but only when it is raining!)

i really like

Tuesday, November 12

(bea) i saw this on the guardian site in the archives. i thought it was really beautiful, and elegant as well - not what you would normally expect from Tracey Emin! Swimming pools Not just for the swimming, but architecturally, too. If I could design a giant work of art, I would like to design four pools along the Thames. I'd call them the London Ovals - you'd be able to see them from the air, from planes flying over the city. Each pool would have a roof that came over in winter and down in summer. You'd use both Thames water and fresh water. I think about it a lot; I've even come up with some plans. I'm interested in architecture using water. Pools can be a work of art, not just a pool. If I had my way, there'd be a swimming pool in every estate, every few streets. I used to swim 1km a day five days a week - it's really good for the soul, because whatever you jump into the pool with, you come out not with it any more. You leave the baggage in the water.

(bea)i found a really cool thing on the internet today as part of embody.co.uk which is all about safe and experimental prayer - hope this works!
(andy) well, the beer is now bottled:

all that remains is to let it sit for a week or two and then crack one open and see if its even vagually drinkable. to be honest, dan and i arent holding out a lot of hope for it. we thought about calling it "devil's piss" for obvious reasons, but maybe it'll be alright in the end. we'll try a new one tomorrow and hopefully do it right this time.

other than that, not a lot happening, still waiting for our new car - we've seen a couple out on the roads which has been quite exciting.

Monday, November 11

(bea)it's been pointed out to me that there is no way for all you eager fans to conatct andy or myself via our blog. i realise the distress this must be causing and i'm trying to rectify it!

last week we bought a car and not just any old banger! we decided to splash out and after my spectacular haggling skills we have purchased a wonderful rover! we pick it up next week.

other news is that today i have been enjoying a day at home being a house-wife/lady of leisure. i looked after the lovely ben clifford as well so now i smell of sick!! he is growing at a very fast pace and caroline is developing arms like those arnie scwartzneger (joking!!).

i think having a day off has sent me a bit loopy! i made a granary loaf today which i am looking forward to trying - the first time i've made granary as normally i would just make a white loaf.

Friday, November 8

(bea)it seems that the weekend is here at last and i am sooooo tired! i always seem to be tired. i really can't work out how much sleep i need and i'm not very good at building in rest periods!! andy is trying to encourage me to say 'no' to things but i'm not very good at it!! we had a great night last night though with cathers and jen and a bottle of wine!

andy is on the hunt for empty beer bottles - his brew needs to be bottled soon, maybe even this weekend! i think it smells disgusting!

one last thing before i go and grab a diet coke to keep me functioning! the picture that andy has put below is great but i would just like to make you aware that i don't have giant red marks filling my legs!! the film got wet in the camera and i think this is the result!

penny (my mum-in-law) called yesterday and has been looking at our blog - SHE IS A SUPERSTAR!!!!!!

(andy) another week seems to have flown by. kinda wierd really. been a bit stressfull, but alright. and the weekend is here.

good to here of lots of stuff happening in terms of people just organising there own things, and others going along to them... bottling the beer tomorrow hopefully although its still bubbling away so maybe its not quite finished yet. i guess that'll give us time to get enough bottles to put it all in!
just to say, the online gallery has been further updated with lots of scanned pics of (amongst others) our time tubing down rivers drinking beer and eating beef jerky! as usual a pic to whet your appetite...

which should now open it in a new window if i got the html right!

Thursday, November 7

A man accidentally killed his 14-year-old son with a crossbow when he mistook the boy for a deer (Adamsville, Ohio, October).

A man accidentally shot his adult son with his Father's Day handgun (which the son had loaded before gift-wrapping) (Coraopolis, Pa., June).

Mothers in Jackson, Wis., and Port Richey, Fla., shot their sons (ages 9 and 10, respectively) with BB rifles in object lessons taken too far (August; September).

A man accidentally fired his hunting bow, driving an arrow into the skull of his 11-year-old daughter, but she survived (Muncie, Ind., September).

An 8-year-old boy was taken away by child welfare officials in September after his stepfather shamelessly admitted that he had used a stun gun on the boy for being late for school (Sweeny, Texas).

(bea)i've mentioned this site before, but couldn't make it a link. here's another try at linking it but you can always copy and paste it into your internet address bar!

(bea)woo hoo!! andy is a genius! i'm so pleased that he's got the pictures up and running. now you can see our time in america and work out for yourself what we got up to! it seems like we were there for so long that most of it has become a blur - apart from the people who were and are still amazing and wonderful and unforgettable!

I went on to a freebie site today to see if i could get anything cool but it was all a bit naff, or if it was cool there was a catch! I spend so much of my day on the internet due to students failing to turn up! At least i still get paid!!

Wednesday, November 6

(andy) well, the basics of an online photo album is now up and running, kicked off with a large selection of photos from texas plus some from nick and marjeries (sp?!) wedding amongst others.
there are still a few holes where i've not got the photo sorted out quite yet, and none of the photo captions/ descriptions are done yet either, but as a small taster of a photo, here is one of a very rainy day in houston, tx where there are people actually tubing down the street!!

you can even click on the picture to take you there...(!) the wonders (and complexities) of html.

Tuesday, November 5

(Barnaby) I've just looked at Andy and Bea's World of Roman Umbrellas, and I think that the name of their blog would be ideal for a rather posh cafe bar type thing.

Posted by Barnaby - someone who uses capital letters and punctuation.

and so the home brew has begun.

here are some pics of dan austin and i, the proud brew masters of 40 pints of stout (to be). all rejoice!

more of a test run than anything but hopefully drinkable.

Monday, November 4

bea meanwhile is sorting out the colours of our blog.

hopefully not too much pink.

it seems we can now put pix up on our blog. which is very good news indeed. just need to get that picture of our homebrew...
just trying something out...

if that works...

(bea)good morning!

we have had a good weekend but as ever it is monday and i feel really tired. i remember my mum always saying that when the school holidays ended and she had to go back to work she would feel more tired than when they started because her body had got used to resting. i think this is so true because as soon as i slow down it's hard to get the cogs turning more quickly again.

for those who are still interested (!) our house seems to be de-catting. it feels much like home now although weird that we actually own it. i'm suddenly paranoid about people moving furniture up and down stairs because of paint-work getting chipped. this was something my parents used to do so it is confirmed that i am turning into them!!

i am also starting to rectify the template that i trashed! our blog links are back on including some new ones so enjoy looking at those. i need to go now to take notes for one of the coolest students i work with. i am trying to think of note-taking as a craft (following something bryan said when he wasn't quoting the bible at me!!)

woops - i was messing with the template and managed to lose all our personal links! we will try and restore hese because they were probably some of the best bits!

Tuesday, October 29

(bea) check out a new link http://www.nobodyhere.com/justme/index.html which is really thought provoking and beautiful to look at.

Monday, October 28

well, found out yesterday or maybe saturday from the knowledgable abigail that the root words of theory and theology are actually different, so the words are not really related at all. oh well. made me think for a bit though...

(bea)the weekend has been good although i don't feel particularly rested. it's been great being in our new house and my asthma is holding up well. people have commented that on the phone i sound breathless which is not a great sign, but i'm still praying.

andy and i had our first ever planned msn date this weekend with out wonderful friends trish and danny in houston. it's a weird concept to be making a date to chat accross the internet but it was really cool - slower than a phone conversation but more interactive than an email. i still miss letters though - no one seems to write anymore (including myself). i sat down to write a letter not so long ago and found it really hard. i wonder whether it is actually a real skill. we watched possession at the cinama the other night - it's amazing, and the language and eloquence just puts our skills of communication to shame!

the weather is getting really windy and cold - it's really excitng that autumn is here although the leaves seem to be blowing off the trees before they get a chance to have their new colours displayed in all their glory. jen bought us round a beautiful leaf that she found in the park - she did that for me last year too. she is so precious.

just saw this on the internet!

Among the more daring indigenous national games (from a September ABC News report): fish-fighting in Thailand (just like cockfighting but with specially bred fish in a tank); competitive kite-flying in several Southeast Asia countries (kites with sharp edges for contestants to try to shred opponents' kites); and "pato," which is now played in Argentina with a partially buried ball with handles, but which originally was played by burying a duck up to his neck and attempting to yank it up while on horseback. (bea)we are about to move into our new home - yipee! lovely life at the lovells had to come to an end at some point but i'm really glad to be finally making an attempt at living in freedom road... if only i could get freedom from this asthma and allergies!

people around me are talking about christmas presents already - one person even asked me to remind her to wrap them tonight! i don't believe that this is happening and october isn't even over. i am still deciding the best course of action on christmas presents - to buy early, to buy in a last minute but very exciting dash or to make my own. i always really enjoy getting a home-made present or even a well-thought out present. there's no point in gifts for the sake of gifts. I'd much prefer someone to spend some quality time with me, such as go out for a christmas eve coffee somewhere nice than to get me a present just 'cos.

we are off to the mighty 'nam this year for christmas and then hopefully to geneva at some point (or italy) to visit andy's dad and step-mum. once we're moved in and settled i will start the exciting task of bastilling all my christmas cards.

BASTILLE/BASTILLING (sp?) - a term brought into use by viv. related to the german verb meaning to hand-craft out of paper and stuff.

fancy doing a bible study on saturday morning? - doing one at mine at 10.30am. only come if it flicks your switch - no room for religious and legalistic rituals in my life!!

st augustine said "LOVE GOD AND DO WHATEVER"

this is a good quote for today.

Tuesday, October 22

(bea)i think andy should use this space to be able to rant and rave - his rantings are great late at night! they go straight over my head and i have been known to leave him talking to the ceiling while i drift off into la la land.

the lovell's is still a beautiful hotel set in the midst of broomhill. we eat breakfast together which is wonderful.

going to the healing sessions at church in the evening - hope you believers are still praying, and if not, then can you be practical and come and help us clean the house!

(andy) i was walking home from work last night and what looked like a news team, complete with video camera, stopped my and asked me what i thought about the fireman strike this weekend. i replied "i know nothing about it" and went on my way. as i carried on walking i thought about it quite a bit and whilst i was in some way shocked that i didnt know anything about it, i did have plenty of opinions on the matter.

i then i thought about writing about it on this blog site. and then thought that blogs are a perfect place to be really opinionated about everything.

so i've decided to not say anything about it after all.

(andy) i was in a lecture about computer databases today, and noticed the word theoretical starts with the same element as theology. one means "a concept that is not yet verified but that if true would explain certain facts or phenomena; a belief that can guide behavior" (WordNet 1.6 online dictionary), the other simply meaning the study of God coming from theo- (meaning God) and -ology (meaning study of, as in biology). so why do the words have the same beginning implying a similar root or origin of words?

a theory is a concept that is not shown to be true but would explain an otherwise ununexplained result. does this work in the same way as theology, or more the point, God?
on one hand theology is not God, merely the study of God, and so should not nessecarily taken to be The Truth, and yet it is something that describes an aspect of God, but one that cannot be/ is not yet proven. it's looking at the Word of God, and with a mixture of experience and Gods revelation through the holy spirit, becomes a theology (although that belief itself is a theology of course as some people would say that God does not show things in that kind of way, that the Holy Spirit does not work in that way these days but God communicates to us by the Word alone).

(where was i?...)
so if a theology is a theory about God that cannot shown to be true (because that probably means you could prove God exists!) i guess it still only remains a theory and not a proven fact. not that i'm saying this is needed to believe it and is "a belief that can guide behavior" as that is what faith is, "being certain of what you hope for and sure of what you do not see", ie taking a theory to be true even if its not (yet?) verified.

and similarly, if a theory or theology is verified to be not true, can it therefore be taken to not be the explanation of that specific set of phenomena (as reworded from the dictionary definition)?, not to say the phenomena did not happen but that the theory is not the explanation for those phenomena.

so then, should a theology be shown to be true by verification for it to fully explain something of Gods character?
well no, in that that is what faith is as mentioned earlier - often the "stumbling block" of many scientists including myself until i was shown this.

but, if a theology says something is true, but can be verified to not be true, then it surely ceases to become a correct theory and hence true theology.

if you understood any of that, well done, and if you disagreed with the argument, please email me (at: moosh95@hotmail.com ) as to why.

of course the 2 words sharing the same element could all be coincidence and the theo of theology is completely unrelated to the theo of theory, and so forget all of the above.... but it did give a small insight into the way my mind thinks. now if i can only get my head around the meanings of for- in forgive, forget and forego...(!)

(andy) i think the vaguely cryptic names for us may confuse a few. smelly pumpkin... fluffy bunny...

(bea)have just been looking at some of the most recently edited blogs - there's some weird stuff out there! i wonder what our blog says to the unsuspecting public who happen to stumble upon us!
(bea)i've been messing around with the template and somehow we've lost the paragraphs to our text. does anyone understand what may have gone wrong - ant?!!

we'd love to hear from you.

(bea)Morning!

The weather in sheffield this morning was amazing - all misty and wintery. i love it - in fact we both do! Andy didn't like the drizzle that accompanied it but it reminded me of hot chocolates in front of the fire and being all snuggled up.

A realisation about my relationship with film

Last night we went to see Red Dragon at the cinema. It was really great - it gave me a really interesting insight into how films affect me. Ages ago I made the decision that I would stop watching certain films because they freaked me out too much - these were psychological thrillers in particular. However, i still wanted to see hannibal and Red Dragon and neither of these freaked me out at all, even though the content is pretty revolting at times! Anyway, my realisation is that the Hannibal Lecter films don't mess with your mind - they kind of walk me through the process of what is being investigated so I don't feel like like anything is about to be sprung upon me. A bit like a really good book, I feel like I am within the story and in relationship with the characters and for some reason, this means that I really enjoy the film. In contrast, I was encouraged to watch 'Don't Say A Word' a few weeks ago and hated it - if it wasn't for the fact that I was watching it with Sam and Suzie Lovell (both teenagers) and didn't want to appear pathetic (!) I would have walked out!

We stayed at the Lovell's last night which was as amazing as staying at a plush hotel. The drugs are starting to work and yesterday I managed to spend an afternoon in the house without doing a darth vader impression! Loads of people have apparently offered their services to come and vacuum and clean in the house - we need to wash all the walls down and make sure it is as clean as possible. Hopefully we'll move ourselves in at the weekend!

Viv brought an amazing card round to our house yesterday which she had bastilled. It has a picture of a house with us standing out the front (with wicked dreads!) and in the sky is a red heart, raining down rays of love onto our house - I love it! Hope that God keeps pouring his love onto our house and into our home.

Sunday, October 20

(andy) well, we have now moved in, beating the time limit set by cathers and tony/gee so we have now won ourselves a free meal out as reward for this feat. good news indeed.
on a slightly more depressing note, we discovered on our first day in the house, whilst unpacking all our belongings, that bea is in fact allergic to our new house! more specifically the cat hair that is in every nook and cranny of the house turning up in clean glasses and even the oven! so the next step would be to get the carpets shampooed, failing that rip em all out. after that, i've no idea.

(bea) a gp friend of ours has dosed me up on every inhhaler possible to get my lungs in order. we still haven't slept in our new house - kipped at the mitchell's last night and we're going to see if some friend's of ours could put up with us for a week or so. this would give us time to de-allergise the house we hope! God's not healed me yet so for all you believers reading this, pray and pray hard!! No room for the enemy in my life...

(andy) this isnt like it is in the movies is it? the newly weds are supposed to move into their house and live happily ever after, not have to sit outside for fear of hospitalising themselves. allergic to your own house? i mean come on...!

Thursday, October 17

Good morning bloggers!

people have already been reading - it would appear that ant clifford gets the prize for the first person ever to experience the world of a fluffy bunny and a smelly pumpkin via the blog. i am very excited about the many possibilities this blog opens up to us. i read a really great one the other day set up by a homeless guy called kevin. i don't remember the address right now but i think it's on www.blogger.com site. anyway, he has a chat space, a message board and loads of stuff.

we have hired a van for tomorrow for moving - if anyone is able to help us do this that would be great - men in particular as we have some heavy items. the house is amazing - we have this massive corner bath which you could swim in if you were really small. also there's loads of wood been left in the cellar which, as jen pointed out, will be fantastic for making canvas frames. let me know if you want any.

at work at the moment and about to go and take notes in a planning for towns and countryside lecture!
back to packing later on though!

Wednesday, October 16

today we completed on our beautiful mansion. it is two up and two down but has a vast attic extension in which you could disappear for centuries. we went round this evening with the loveky glitter jen and did church. the front door was open and probably has been since 2nd august. good job we checked this now rather than when our tv and dvd were being sold off the back of a truck!

if you are reading this then you may be one of the first ever people to read it!!

back at home and trying to fathom out this blogging business. somehow our blogspot is restricted.

everyone else is blogging so why aren't we?!

the roman umbrella is a world that is rapidly changing at the moment.
we are being taken to new domestic havens and adventures are abounding.

we are in love and married.
we thought we would share our world with anyone who is intersted.

welcome!!
